Infinite Country by Patricia Engel | Thoughts

Published : 2021   ||    Format : print   ||    Location : Colombia ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆   What was it about the country that kept everyone hostage to its fantasy? The previous month, on its own soil, an American man went to his job at a plant and gunned down fourteen coworkers, and last spring alone there were four different school shootings. A nation at war with itself, yet people still spoke of it as some kind of paradise.. Thoughts : Infinite Country follows two characters - young Talia, who at the beginning of this book, escapes a girl’s reform school in North Colombia so that she can make her previously booked flight to the US. Before she can do that, she needs to travel many miles to reach her father and get her ticket to the rest of her family. About

Welcome to Reading on a Rainy Day! I am Athira (ä-thĭ-rə), project manager by day, supermom (I try) by night. I grew up in both India and United Arab Emirates, and later came to the US to pursue my graduate studies and later settled in Lynchburg, VA. I married my knight in shining armor in 2012, and we promptly decided to expand our troop by... adopting Rue - our maybe Jack Russell, maybe Pit Bill Terrier, maybe something completely different canine, but definitely pampered fur-baby, that same year. And so we remained that way for several years, blissfully lost in lofty pursuits of dreams, hobbies, and what not.

Nah, that's not true. Though I do imagine sometimes that I would be reading 100+ books every year to this day, if not for the next chapter in my life.

Ladybug arrived during the summer of 2015, very curious but also ensuring that she was nothing like those infants in the books I read preparing for her birth. This is when I started embracing ebooks, which continues to this day. This is also when I started learning how to read in two-minute intervals. It's amazing how long it can take to finish a supposedly-fast read!

Couple of years later, we decided to move to Mason, OH, for a new job, more opportunities, and a big town lifestyle. This is also when this blog goes silent - my new job was different from my previous but also very challenging. Reading was no longer the calming activity I sought for when I reached home. TV gave me the escape I craved.

We welcomed Munchkin in 2018. Have you ever felt super-confident when you're expecting your second, believing you've seen it all? Yes, that was me. And then comes Munchkin - he was the textbook baby - slept well (win), everything went in the mouth (boo), ate like a champ (yay), and needed lots of babyproofing (ugh).

I've had my hands full the last couple of years but in all these years, I have never had a hobby as fulfilling as reading and blogging. Cue, the return...

About my reading

I've probably been reading books, newspapers, and cereal boxes ever since I could read. But I started reading voraciously only at the end of my first year at grad school when I started questioning the purpose of life, the universe, and everything. (Coincidentally, that is also the time I started job-hunting.) This blog was born another semester later, when I still had not finished my philosophical pondering. (Coincidentally, I was still looking for a job.)

As with most people, my tastes tend to follow my moods and aspirations heavily. You'll find a ton of literary fiction and nonfiction on these pages, but oftentimes, I gravitate towards fantasy and related genres.
